Whether you have a “gummy” smile, or your teeth appear too short or stubby in your grin, gum recontouring can help reveal more of your healthy enamel and put the focus back on your pearly whites where it belongs. Although the idea of recovering from periodontal surgery may seem daunting, the truth is that the healing process is easier than you might think. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect following gum recontouring surgery, and why it may be one of the best choices you’ll ever make for your oral health!
What is Gum Recontouring?
Gum recontouring is a treatment that removes the excess periodontal tissue from the base of the teeth, making them appear longer and more central to your smile. Not only that, but because you’ll have less superfluous tissue, it should be easier to keep mouth clean, thereby lowering your risk of cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease.
The results of gum recontouring are permanent, and the entire procedure can typically be done in one appointment!
The First 24 Hours
Once your surgery has concluded, you can return home and get plenty of rest. While it’s not a physically exhausting procedure, the more you can relax and recuperate following treatment, the sooner your body will heal.
It is normal to feel some discomfort following gum recontouring, and your gums may be swollen. These can both be managed by applying cold compresses and taking OTC pain relievers as needed.
Your oral surgeon also recommends eating a cold, soft diet, including things like yogurt, ice cream, and smoothies for the first few weeks post-op, or until you feel ready.
Days 2 – 3
Over the next few days, the discomfort in your gums should gradually improve. Be sure to maintain excellent oral hygiene, including brushing your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, flossing, and using an antiseptic mouthwash to help lower the risk of your gums becoming infected. Be sure to continue avoiding strenuous activities to give your gums more time to heal. This is because when your blood is pumping due to exertion, it can be diverted away from the periodontal tissue and make recovery take longer.
One Week Post-Op
After the first seven days or so, your mouth should be feeling much better. Any swelling and pain should be much less noticeable. If not, reach out to your dentist as soon as possible, as you may be developing an infection.
Be sure to keep up with your oral hygiene and continue consuming a soft diet that does not irritate your gums.
Two to Four Weeks Post-Op
By the two-week marker, your gums should be feeling much better, and you should hopefully be enjoying the appearance of your new smile! At this stage, you should also be able to eat harder and more abrasive foods, but don’t let your oral hygiene slide. Now that your mouth has mostly healed, you’ll still want to prevent things like cavities and gum disease, which can eventually cause tooth loss if not treated promptly!
One Month Post-Op
After 30 days post-op, your periodontal tissue should be completely healed, and you should no longer be experiencing any discomfort or swelling. Dietary and physical restrictions should no longer be necessary, but excellent oral hygiene will remain an absolute must!
Maintaining Your Smile After Gum Recontouring
Overall, your healing process should only take a few weeks, but the good news is that once you’ve cleared that hurdle, not only are your results permanent, but you shouldn’t need to do anything special to maintain your new smile. Be sure to continue brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day, flossing daily, and use mouthwash if you’d like. Furthermore, don’t forget to visit your dentist every six months for your regular checkups and cleanings.
Remember, recovering from gum recontouring is a relatively mild, brief process, but vitally important to the success of your new smile. Thus, for your treatment’s best results, be sure to follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions, and always maintain excellent oral hygiene, and you’ll enjoy a gorgeous, healthy grin for years to come!
